Pampa ISD Art Program Featured on Magazine Cover

Posted Date: 05/11/2021

Last spring Pampa ISD held a Big Art Day Event which featured miniature cardboard houses created by the students of Pampa ISD. Stephanie Boyd, the PHS art teacher, received word this week that the houses from Big Art Day have made the cover of Trends Magazine, the Texas art educator magazine that is given out to thousands of art educators in the state. Boyd received a message from Dr. Bill Nieberding, Co-Editor of Trends, which stated: “I wanted to let you know that we are planning to use the image you took of the houses all of your students made on the cover of Trends this year. We think the project REALLY represents Big Art Day, and the greater readership of the journal VERY WELL...”

According to Boyd, "The old saying, “It takes a village” does not apply only to the raising of children. It also takes a village to build a miniature cardboard village, which is exactly what the students of Pampa ISD in the Texas Panhandle did for Big Art Day. We had sort of a loose theme for our Big Art Day celebrations, which was Community. To showcase that, we came up with an ambitious plan to have every student from kindergarten to the seniors in high school create one cardboard house each, and then the four junior high/high school art teachers would assemble them into a miniature village. This was a truly collaborative project between all the students of our district, as well as all of the teachers. Our high school kids cut out the cardboard houses for the k-3 kids and then went to one elementary school per week to help the little kids put their houses together. That was perhaps the best part of the whole endeavor. To see the older kids volunteer to go help the little ones assemble, cut, and draw on their houses for the sake of our Big Art Day project was truly inspiring."

If you want to know more about the magazine, you may click here for the magazine’s website. When the edition featuring Pampa’s Big Art Day is published, the link for that edition will also be posted.

Congratulations, Pampa ISD Art community!
